wrongful-terminations-statistics-2017-3

Every year, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) released detailed data on the number and type of claims it has received during the previous fiscal year. This gives us a unique look into real wrongful termination trends.

The good news is that the total number of filings has decreased from 2016. 2014 to 2016 showed an alarmingly increasing trend in employment discrimination claims, but this trend was corrected in 2017. The 84k figure still isn’t at pre-depression lows, but it’s a step closer.

As we can see from the chart detailing the types of wrongful termination claims below, retaliation is still the leading source of wrongful discharge claims. This is most likely due to human nature, as employers will always show contempt towards employees who have seemingly wronged them in one way or another.

Racial discrimination claims have decreased nicely, as have age discrimination complaints.
